The Yellow Wallpaper / Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Paper tells the story of a young woman’s psychological collapse. The narrator has been feeling down–probably because she is married to a physician named John who is “practical in the extreme.” Her husband, being practical and all, decides that the best thing to do for her “condition” is to hole her up in an old nursery plastered with shitty yellow wallpaper. As the story progresses, it is unclear if her breakdown is the result of depression or infantilization. At any rate, you’ll never be able to look at the color yellow the same way again.
